Jovan Coleman aka J1 aka The Deer March 5, 1979 – November 27, 2011
I was just sitting here thinking about life and how things transcends into a bird flying with the wind. We tend to try to be alert with what we are doing, who we associate with, and where are we going. Just in any matter, we really don’t know any of those things nor do we know whether a meteor or an asteroid is coming close to hit. I can say about Jovan Coleman aka J1 aka The Deer is that I never knew we were going to be as close as we were in the few years that we have known each other. Literally, J1, Groweyez, and myself were really like blood. We agreed and disagreed amongst each other. J was like this guy that could not be defeated. He would always ask me “What is the plan for today?” or “What’s up, Brotha?” He always tried to make Ced feel like Ced was his blood and it was his duty to protect Ced, Weyez, and any other person that he considered family.
He was my drummer, man. Anytime he sat at the drums and I was on keys, it was ALWAYS magical. We would straight zone out into this journey. It felt like we surpassed the earth and it took us a while for us to come back. That was what started us to being what we’ve became. I told him I didn’t want any other drummer from that point on. Master Blazter and Hawthorne Headhunters was and is family because we were all close as a musical family.
The news of J’s demise is really something that is still unreal. We had not talked for awhile due to bullshit. That is just as simple as that. So with all that said, make sure you all love and straighten out any kind of bullshit that is on the path of separation. At the end of it all, it doesn’t mean a thing. J1, man, it still seems unreal but it is starting to settle in a bit now. I learned a lot from you and still learning man. I truly miss you my brotha. But I do understand you are still alive as long as I am alive. I still say, “Roller derby Hi Five” because of you sir.
Man… peace and keep shining like the star that you are. The journey was crazy fun.
